What’s inside.
A hospital IT system is only as good as its ability to move information at the right moment. This concise guide clarifies the key standards (HL7, FHIR, Ségur, DMP, Mon espace santé) and sets out the concrete requirements to demand from your vendors in order to avoid data silos.

8Frequently asked questions
What we are asked about this.
What is hospital information system interoperability?
It is the ability of a hospital's software (EHR, laboratory, imaging, pharmacy) to exchange and reuse data without re-entry. It relies on shared format and vocabulary standards, so information produced in one department is immediately readable and usable in another.
What is the difference between HL7 and FHIR?
HL7 is the family of health data exchange standards ; FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) is its modern, web based version (REST APIs, structured resources). FHIR makes real time exchange between applications easier and is now the preferred choice for new projects.
How can you check that an EHR vendor is genuinely interoperable?
Ask for documented support of standards (FHIR, HL7), open APIs, and the ability to export your data in a reusable format. Be wary of proprietary gateways that recreate data silos in another form.
Why does interoperability condition medical AI projects?
An AI model needs structured, consistent data to produce reliable results. Since roughly 80% of health data remains unstructured, AI use cases stay limited without interoperability that structures and circulates the information.
Why do fragmented systems hurt patient care?
When systems do not communicate, caregivers re-enter the same data, results travel by email or paper, and critical information can be missing at the point of care. A missing allergy or an invisible ongoing treatment is a direct safety risk.
